The Witcher Review: A Kick-Ass Adaption Of Monster Hunting, Magic And The Condition Of Being Different

The Witcher is one of my favourite fantasy series of all time, with books and games telling the story of Geralt of Rivia in glorious fashion. So, naturally I was excited to hear that Netflix had decided to make a live action version of the series. But with that excitement came anxiety. Could Geralt’s story be adapted faithfully to the realm of TV? Could quintessential action hero Henry Cavill inhabit the gritty life of the White Wolf and make it believable? Or would the show follow in the footsteps of the final season of Game of Thrones as a car crash of epic fantasy proportions?

The answer is resoundingly positive. Netflix’s The Witcher is a love letter written in the blood of monsters and gilded with the magic of breathtaking fight scenes. The source material is in good hands with producer Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Continue reading “The Witcher Review: A Kick-Ass Adaption Of Monster Hunting, Magic And The Condition Of Being Different”

Comic Kitchen: Geralt Of Rivia

One of the best ways to experience a different culture is through food, which is why Comic Kitchen exists. The segment is dedicated to creating a three-course meal around a character from pop culture and telling their story through the magic of food. Over the past few months I’ve developed a taste for Polish food, so I’ve teamed up with the staff from Platzki in Manchester to create a menu for Geralt of Rivia. Geralt is a Polish icon, with The Witcher series being one of the greatest fantasy series of all time. Geralt is a man of few words and simple tastes, so the menu taps into traditional Polish food as a reflection of the Witcher’s approach to life. Continue reading “Comic Kitchen: Geralt Of Rivia”

Season Of Storms sees Andrzej Sapkowski return to his most popular character. Set between the short story collection The Last Wish, the book involves Geralt of Rivia going on a new journey. How The Witcher Inspired Me To Get In Touch With My Polish Heritage

Knowing where you come from is important. Heritage provides a connection between the past a present, a way to appreciate your family members and inform where you’d like to be in future. Living in the UK, I’ve grown up around my English relatives, but I didn’t know a lot about the Polish side of the family. Recently, I took a trip to Warsaw to get in touch with my Polish heritage, and that would have never happened if I hadn’t discovered The Witcher. What started out as an appreciation for a series turned into a pilgrimage of learning about my family’s history.

Cosplayer Interview: Dan Ballestero

Cosplaying is a fun experience, as you’re able to dress up as a character you admire and feel like someone else for a day. The cosplaying community is huge, which is why I enjoy interviewing cosplayers from around the world to showcase their work and find out what inspires them. The latest interview is with Dan Ballestero, who is known for his work as Geralt of Rivia and other gaming characters. As a male cosplayer, it was great hearing Dan’s perspective on how cosplay can benefit mental health, create new connections and be an expression of freedom.

Dark Horse Geralt Of Rivia Statue Review

The appeal of collecting memorabilia stems from passion, or something specific that resonates with the collector. I’ve always been someone who appreciates good craftsmanship. The amount of time that goes into sculpting a statue can be taken for granted. That’s why I’ll occasionally be reviewing products that I enjoy from a decorative stand point. I’m starting with the Geralt of Rivia statue I bought from Forbidden Planet in Manchester. This version was made by Dark House in collaboration with CD Projekt Red. The statue is around 20 cm and came in a window box.

Hillbilly: Volume 1 Review: A Backwoods Fairytale

The best kind of stories can creep up on you when you least expect it, which is what I found when I came across Eric Powell’s Hillbilly: Volume 1. Powell is best known for creating The Goon comics and after reading Hillbilly, I can say he’s one hell of a writer. The graphic novel focuses on Rondel, a supernatural wanderer in the Appalachian wilderness who battles monsters, witches and demons. It’s part western, part fantasy and a damn good read.

The Witcher: Curse Of Crows Review

There are some stories that work across multiple formats, whether it’s in TV, film or comics. The Witcher is a great example of this, spawning a series of successful games and books. The latest Witcher story has been collected in a graphic novel called Curse of Crows. Geralt of Rivia finds himself working alongside his adoptive daughter and ward, Ciri to stop a monster from terrorising the city of Novigrad.
