Why Vandal Savage Is One Of The Greatest Villains In Pop Culture

The DC Universe features some of the most prolific and recognised supervillains in pop culture. From the insanity of The Joker, to the cold intellect of Deathstroke, DC have a knack for creating compelling villains with a dark magnetism. Another supervillain that has tested the might of DC’s greatest heroes is Vandal Savage.

An immortal who has plagued humanity since its earliest days, Vandal Savage is a man with a singular purpose of crushing anyone who gets in his way. Continue reading “Why Vandal Savage Is One Of The Greatest Villains In Pop Culture”

Dark Nights: Metal Review: A Comic Event Writing Masterclass

When it comes to comic events, it’s easy to feel cynical about them because of how often they happen. Marvel and DC have got into a habit of altering their universes on a yearly basis, to the point it’s felt as if storytelling has become a money grab, rather than a way of building compelling characters. I’ve felt comic event fatigue before, but there’s something exceptional about the writing of Scott Snyder that keeps me coming back to his stories. Snyder has become the definitive Batman writer, which is why I was eager to pick up Dark Nights: Metal. Here are my thoughts on a graphic novel that nails all the things that makes a comic event worth investing in.

Appreciating The Cultural Significance Of Vixen And Her Role In The DC Universe

With the release of Black Panther, it’s offered a window into the world of ethnic superheroes and demonstrated that they deserve to be recognised as important characters. It’s inspired me to look into other heroes of colour, such as DC’s Vixen, who represents and African perspective that spans generations. She was intended to be DC’s first African female superhero to appear in her own ongoing series, though it was cancelled during the DC Implosion of 1978. Despite this, Vixen went on to become an integral member of the Justice League. The character also received her own TV series within the Arrow verse, which displayed her relevance to a modern audience. With the ability to harness the powers of the animal kingdom, Vixen is an intriguing superhero that’s worth looking into.

Untangling The History Of Hawkgirl And Discovering What Makes Her One Of DC’s Greatest Superheroes

In mainstream comics it’s common for a character to be updated for a modern audience in order to keep them interesting. Their backstory might be altered or they may gain a new ability. A character with a history of being altered is Hawkgirl. Created in 1941, Hawkgirl is one of DC’s oldest superheroines, and having served with The Justice League and The Justice Society of America, she’s a premiere hero, but her history and identity have become muddled. From Ancient Egypt to an alien planet called Thanagar, The Comic Vault is tracing Hawkgirl’s story to see what makes her such an intriguing character.

Justice League Review: The DCEU Finds Its Feet At Last

Since the DC Extended Universe was created, it’s felt like there was a rush to catch up with the MCU. It’s been criticised for being overly dark, but Wonder Woman proved to be a step in the right direction. Justice League is the next entry in the franchise and I’m happy to say it’s continued DC’s momentum. The film brings together Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg to save the world, which they pull off with a sense of promise.
