The Guardians of The Galaxy film franchise has been responsible for introducing a lot of obscure comic characters to a mainstream audience. The likes of Drax, Rocket Racoon and Groot have all benefited from the spotlight. Mantis is another superhero that’s had some great exposure, though the film version differs greatly to the comic portrayal. In the comics, Mantis is linked to The Avengers and her backstory makes her one of the most intriguing female superheroes in the Marvel Universe. Living up to a legacy is difficult, especially when you’re trying to stand on your own two feet. For a long time, Richard Rider had to uphold the legacy of the Nova Corps after they’d been wiped out. After Rider died, Sam Alexander needed to carry the torch, not an easy feat for a teenager. The two Novas share a lot of similarities and they finally come face to face in Jeff Loveness’ Nova: Resurrection. A resurrected Rider tries to adjust to being alive, while Sam grapples with the perils of puberty. The graphic novel makes for an entertaining read, combining themes of family and adulthood. Since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, fans have watched dozens of characters interact and build up a world that viewers have invested in. Through it all, there’s been an anticipation of leading towards something that would change the face of the MCU forever. After a decade of development, fans finally have what they’ve been clamouring for with Avengers: Infinity War. The hype and stakes can’t be overstated, which is why I’m going into full on fanboy mode with this review.
The MCU has established itself as a rich universe with characters that are connected to each other. Each movie is designed to set up the next chapter and raise the stakes. But all the universe building can be overwhelming when it’s done too much. So, a self-contained film like Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 is a refreshing change of pace. Here is my spoiler free review.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol: 2 coming out later this year, it’s created a fresh opportunity to open up a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the opportunity comes the chance to see many obscure characters from the franchise make it on to the big screen. As impressive as the film looks there’s one character that’s missing and should be mentioned for his importance. Richard Rider also known as Nova, is considered the most recognized member of the Nova Corps. He was absent from the first Guardians despite the Nova Corps playing a large role in the plot. As there is a large fan base for Rider it’s my hope that he’ll appear in future installments.
