Comics feature some of the most recognisable villains in the history of pop culture. Everyone knows characters like The Joker and Doctor Doom because of their reputation or powers. There are memorable female supervillains as well, but few have been presented as having the level of danger that’s associated with characters like Thanos or Darkseid. A female supervillain who deserves to be placed in the same category as these heavy hitters is Granny Goodness.

As a general in Darkseid’s army and leader of the Female Furies, Granny Goodness is one of the most formidable supervillains to ever be created. I’m looking into why she has the potential to become a universe ending threat.

Comics provide an excellent opportunity for worlds to be created, with characters spinning off into their own series. Drew Edwards, the writer of Halloween Man, decided to do exactly that by creating Lucy Chaplin: Science Starlet. The comic features the adventures of Lucy Chaplin, a capable scientist who is considered to be one of the greatest minds in the world. The comic is intriguing because it contains a mixture of feminist empowerment and gender politics.

Appreciating The Cultural Significance Of Vixen And Her Role In The DC Universe

With the release of Black Panther, it’s offered a window into the world of ethnic superheroes and demonstrated that they deserve to be recognised as important characters. It’s inspired me to look into other heroes of colour, such as DC’s Vixen, who represents and African perspective that spans generations. She was intended to be DC’s first African female superhero to appear in her own ongoing series, though it was cancelled during the DC Implosion of 1978. Despite this, Vixen went on to become an integral member of the Justice League. The character also received her own TV series within the Arrow verse, which displayed her relevance to a modern audience. With the ability to harness the powers of the animal kingdom, Vixen is an intriguing superhero that’s worth looking into.
