When it comes to exploring supervillain motivations, mental illness is often flagged as a contributing factor. While there’s an argument to be made that some villains can genuinely suffer from a mental health disorder, others simply enjoy killing and being evil for the sake of it. Mister Freeze falls into the first category. A sufferer of complex bereavement disorder (CBD), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression, Mister Freeze has one of the most realistic mental health trauma stories in popular culture. In recent years, mental health management has become one of the most talked about topics in the world. More and more people are opening up about their disorders and changing the perception of mental health. But coping with a disorder like anxiety or depression is an ongoing battle. Finding positive role models who’ve gone through similar experiences can help you realise that you’re not alone. Look no further than superheroes.
Superhero Mentality is a series that’s dedicated to finding positive lifestyle routines through the lens of different characters. Polaris is a hero who’s struggled with her mental health for years. A sufferer of bipolar disorder, Lorna Dane’s story is highly relatable from a millennial point of view. That’s why I’ve created a mental health routine that I think she’d stick to. Perhaps it can inspire other millennials to find their own coping strategies. Continue reading “Superhero Mentality: Polaris”

Even superheroes like Mister Miracle aren’t immune to suicidal thoughts. Raised in a hyper-masculine and violent society, Scott Free spent his whole life trying to escape. He fled to Earth, created a new identity for himself and married a good woman, but it wasn’t enough to stop his depression. He tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists. Eventually, Scott managed to get his life back on track by finding a routine that worked for him. Continue reading “Superhero Mentality: Mister Miracle”
When it comes to mental health, comics are valuable tools for shedding light on topics such as depression and bipolar disorder. Superheroes are just as vulnerable as anyone else and their mental health struggles have been captured in vivid detail. Superhero Mentality reveals the positive mental health routines of characters who battle with their inner demons on a regular basis.
Daredevil is a prime example of a superhero who struggles to cope with depression. A long term sufferer of depression, Matt Murdock has found purpose by fighting crime. As a blind superhero, Daredevil has the potential to be a role model for people with visual impairments. It’s why I’ve put together a routine of how I think Daredevil would manage his condition and explain how it can be positive for people who suffer from similar disorders. Continue reading “Superhero Mentality: Daredevil”
Depression is one of the most common mental health illnesses that people grapple with. It can strike at any time and makes no distinction between young or old. Learning to deal with thoughts of self-doubt can be difficult, which is why comics are a great source of inspiration for mental health representation. The Scarlet Witch is a superhero that’s struggled with depression in a realistic way. But rather than let it consume her, she’s adopted coping strategies that have helped to change her life. I think Scarlet Witch is a brilliant role model for anyone who suffers from depression and I’m going to look into the reasons why.
