The fascinating world of X-Men contains a lot of interesting characters. Whether they’re heroes, villains or antiheroes, the mutants of the X-Men franchise are exceptionally interesting and entertaining characters.
Today we’re are going to analyse Storm and the origin of her powers within the franchise. We’ve prepared a lot of interesting facts for you today, so be sure to stick with us until the end!
Who is Storm and what are her powers?
Storm is a fictional superheroine appearing in stories published by Marvel Comics. She is a mutant and a member of the X-Men, whose real name is Ororo Munroe. She was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockburn and she had her debut in Giant-Size X-Men#1 (May 1975). Since then, she has become a regular among the X-Men and one of the most loyal allies of Professor X.
Ororo Munroe is the daughter of a Kenyan tribal princess and an American photojournalist. She was raised in New York City and Cairo. During the Suez Crisis, her parents were killed in an aircraft attack, which also left her trapped under a pile of rubble; this gave her life-long claustrophobia which she has been dealing with ever since.
She remained in Cairo where she became a thief before journeying to the Serengeti. A local tribe worshipped her as a goddess when she manifested her powers. Soon after, Professor Charles Xavier discovered her and approached her to join his team, the X-Men, which she accepted.
Storm, as she was now called, had natural leadership skills, which is why she often served as Professor X’s replacement as the leader of the X-Men; she did that on a number of occasions.
Due to her powers, Storm has been labeled as an Omega-level mutant, which is the highest-ranking that the humans have assigned to mutants. She is, without a doubt, one of the strongest mutants in the whole franchise. Her main power is weather manipulation, achieved through her psionic abilities. Her powers allow her to control all forms of weather over vast areas, both earthly and extraterrestrial.
She can also control different natural phenomena, such as electromagnetic waves, cosmic storms, and magnetism. Due to her ancestry, she also has magical potential, but the comics have never really explored that aspect too thoroughly, which is why it is not listed among her main powers.
She can also fly and breathe in any environment. Her body automatically regulates its temperature, as to avoid any danger. She is exceptionally fast, agile, and has superb dexterity; she can also see in near-complete darkness.
Where did Storm get her powers?
As per the established lore, mutants usually get their powers thanks to the X-Gene, which is responsible for their mutations and their powers. The discovery and manifestation of these powers vary, which means that there are those that discover their full powers at an early age, those that discover them later and gradually develop them, and those that have powers but that are completely useless.
Storm discovered her powers while she was a thief in Cairo. Later, when she went to the Serengeti, she demonstrated her powers to a local tribe that worshiped her like a goddess. It was there that Professor X found her and offered her a spot on the X-Men. Professor X further taught her how to use and control her powers, so he definitely had a part to play in her evolution.
So, to sum it up, Storm got her powers through the X-Gene, with Professor X helping her to further develop them. This is the comic book canon.
Did Storm get her powers from Apocalypse?
The film X-Men: Apocalypse changed Storm’s origins a bit, showing her to be one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who accompany En Sabah Nur, also known as Apocalypse, the first mutant ever.
In the movie, it is Apocalypse who discovers Storm and takes her under his tutelage, enabling her to develop her powers; Professor X met her only later. This chain of events prompted the fandom to ask itself whether Storm actually got her powers from Apocalypse, or whether En Sabah Nur just discovered and groomed them.
First of all, we have to state that this doesn’t have much to do with comic books, as the film changed her origin story to a certain degree. Secondly, even in that changed story, Storm did not get her powers from En Sabah Nur.
He merely discovered her and helped her evolve, but she had already had her powers by then and they are the result of the X-Gene, which is how all the mutants got their powers. This answers all of our main questions.
And that’s it for today. We hope you had fun reading this and that we helped solve this dilemma for you. See you next time and don’t forget to follow at Fiction Horizons.
