Pop culture means different things to different people. It covers music, TV, movies, gaming and more. The beauty of pop culture is that it connects people together and Manchester has all kinds of attractions for geeks, gamers, metal heads, comic fans and everything in between. When it comes to mental health, comics are valuable tools for shedding light on topics such as depression and bipolar disorder. Superheroes are just as vulnerable as anyone else and their mental health struggles have been captured in vivid detail. Superhero Mentality reveals the positive mental health routines of characters who battle with their inner demons on a regular basis.
Daredevil is a prime example of a superhero who struggles to cope with depression. A long term sufferer of depression, Matt Murdock has found purpose by fighting crime. As a blind superhero, Daredevil has the potential to be a role model for people with visual impairments. It’s why I’ve put together a routine of how I think Daredevil would manage his condition and explain how it can be positive for people who suffer from similar disorders. Having a tragic love life is one of the most common themes of being a superhero, especially if you’re Wolverine. Logan has loved many women over the years, such as Jean Grey and Silver Fox, though each relationship has ended in heartbreak or death. Mariko Yashida is someone who has paid the price for being with Wolverine. Mariko died when she asked Logan to mercy kill her after she was poisoned with puffer fish venom.
Recently, Mariko was resurrected as the Scarlet Samurai in the pages of Old Man Logan. With her revival comes the opportunity for Marvel to explore the character in a way that’s never been done before and this can be achieved by featuring Mariko in her own series. Here are four reasons why she deserves to have her story told. Continue reading “4 Reasons Why Mariko Yashida Deserves Her Own Solo Series”
Mental health is one of the most important topics in the world today. It’s becoming easier for people to talk about disorders like anxiety and depression and the stigma is being broken down piece by piece. Comics are an amazing source of mental health inspiration because they feature characters who go through similar issues and show their vulnerability. Superhero Mentality is a series that focuses on a comic character with a mental health or physical disorder and reveals their coping strategies and routines. It’s my hope that the segment encourages readers to discuss their mental health and find their own positive mantras.
Anxiety is a common disorder that affects people across the world. Jessica Cruz, Earth’s first female Green Lantern, has battled with anxiety for years. It’s left her feeling broken and worthless, yet she’s never stopped fighting to overcome it. Continue reading “Superhero Mentality: Jessica Cruz”
Comics, like other storytelling mediums, have often been used to address a range of political issues, such as immigration, gun control and climate change. Superheroes have been used as symbols for different movements, but few characters have stuck to their political principles quite like Green Arrow. Oliver Queen has emerged as a voice of liberal activism and social change. A self-proclaimed ‘defender of the little guy,’ Green Arrow is a superhero who wears his liberalism on his sleeve.
Ollie’s political views have become as integral to him as his bow and quiver. His transformation from spoiled rich kid into social justice warrior makes him unique among his peers. Understanding Green Arrow’s politics is essential to understanding who he is as a person. It’s why I’m taking a closer look at his world view. Continue reading “The Green Arrow Guide To Becoming A Social Justice Warrior”
I’ve been fascinated with Japanese history for a while now, particularly with the samurai and their code of Bushido. They dedicated themselves to ‘the way of the warrior’ and lived by its principles in the pursuit of a perfect death. After reading Bushido: The Way Of The Samurai I feel like I’ve got a broader view of what Bushido stands for. Here are my review of a book that charts the history of one of Japan’s most enduring belief systems.

Travelling is one of the best ways to expand your knowledge of the world. But it’s not the only way to embrace a new culture. Exploring local communities and experiences are eye-opening in their own right. I’m fascinated by Japan and there are plenty of Japanese related activities in my home city of Manchester. There’s restaurants, bars, societies and exhibits dedicated to celebrating the Land of the Rising Sun. It’s why I’ve put together a guide for anyone who wants to explore Manchester through the lens of Japanese culture. Continue reading “The Definitive Guide To Japanese Manchester”
In the world of pop culture, gaming has evolved into one of the most enduring mediums. Humble arcade games, like Space Invaders and Pac-Man, have transformed into legendary series that are known across generations. Gaming has the power to bring people together and create memorable experiences. When there’s beer involved, so much the better. So, when I caught wind of a bar that catered to gamers and beer fans, I set off on a quest to find it. Manchester’s NQ64 did not disappoint. I think books are one of the most precious resources on the planet. As soon as you open a novel, you’re transported to a brand new world. A good author makes their characters stand out. A great author makes their stories resonate for years to come. That is how I feel about The Greatcoats quartet, a collection that has turned into my favourite book series of all time. So, what could be better than reading them, you ask? Getting to talk to the guy that created the books!
Sebastien De Castell was awesome enough to take time out of his busy schedule to talk to me about The Greatcoats and his writing process. In the interview, Sebastien reveals how he created the characters of Falcio, Kest and Brasti and who he’d pick for Falcio to duel in another fantasy novel. Oh, and something about a new Greatcoats series coming out in the future. Continue reading “Fantasy Author Sebastien De Castell Reveals New Details About The Greatcoats”
