Introducing The Comic Curators Video Channel

At the end of 2018, I’ll have been running The Comic Vault for two years. In that time, I’ve been able to express my passion for comics in a number of ways and I’ve decided to branch out further. It’s why I’m pleased to announce the start of Comic Curators, a YouTube channel that’s going to be used in tandem with the website. Read on to find out what you can expect from Comic Curators and my thoughts on making a video for the first time ever!

Starting a video channel is one of the most adventurous steps I’ve ever taken. I’m naturally camera shy, so it’s not something I ever thought I’d do. But talking about comics has made me want to challenge myself and step outside my comfort zone.

Who is running Comic Curators?

Comic Curators is a two man show, with me presenting the content and my friend Dimo filming. (I have him to thank for encouraging me to start the channel).

What did it feel like to make a video?

Nerve-racking! Shooting the first video was certainly a new experience. To prepare myself, I decided to write a script on the things I’d say. When I got in front of the camera, I found I was going off-script right away. Having a structure helped me to pace everything out. Filming was done with a green screen, so it definitely felt intimidating. Dimo’s behind the scenes camera work helped put me at ease.

At the same time, I was determined to see the process through. By the end of shooting, I’d decided that I felt more natural talking in a general sense, rather than going off a script. It’s that kind of experimentation that will be present on Comic Curators.

Shooting a video has given me a new appreciation for the effort YouTubers and actors put in to their performances. It’s not easy to put yourself on camera, so I felt proud to have been able to give it a go.

Where did the inspiration for Comic Curators come from?

Comics have become a major part of pop culture history. The idea behind Comic Curators is to help educate people on how graphic novels reflect real life issues and help people to feel more at peace with themselves. It’s why a main topic on the channel will be comics and mental health.

With that in mind, here is the introduction video to the channel. It involves me talking about what content is going to be featured and why I wanted to start making videos. It turned out a lot better than I hoped so it’d be great to know your thoughts.
