As a writer, I’m always looking to combine my interests together and after reading a local restaurant and culture magazine by Manchester Finest, it’s inspired me to write about comics and food. Everyone loves food. It brings people together, gives them the opportunity to discover new meals and step outside their comfort zone. Superheroes and supervillains need to eat as well and there are plenty of characters who are sensational chefs. With that said, here are four of the most talented male comic chefs.
Alfred Pennyworth
Good chefs need to have the ability to multi-task and few are as versatile as Alfred Pennyworth. As Batman’s friend and butler, Alfred trained in the culinary arts. He regularly prepares meals for social galas hosted at Wayne Manor. This requires a gourmet approach to satisfy socialites and maintain the high standards that people expect from Bruce Wayne.
Alfred can also change his style to cook for different members of the Batman family. For example, Red Hood is a fan of chili dogs, so you know that Alfred has Jason’s favourite meal covered whenever he visits the mansion. With a range of recipes at his disposal, Alfred is definitely one of the most skilled comic chefs.
Green Arrow
In addition to being the finest archer in the DC Universe, Green Arrow knows how to make a decent chili. Officially known as Ollie’s Stupendous Chili, Green Arrow’s signature dish is infamous among the superhero community. It’s considered the hottest chili on the planet (according to Ollie anyway), and few other than the Emerald Archer can stand it because of how fiery it is.
That hasn’t stopped people from trying and the list of heroes who’ve been able to stand the chili is short. Notable examples include Superman, thanks to his trusty ice breath and Batman because he’s Batman of course. Green Arrow isn’t shy about sharing the recipe either as you can see below.
Ingredients:
1 ½ pounds lean sirloin chunks
2 tbsp of cumin
2 tbsp of paprika
1 tbsp of cayenne
1 cup minced onion
½ cup of chopped green pepper (optional)
2 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp fresh ground black pepper
1 ½ tsp of salt
½ of dried basil, crushed
1 tbsp California chili powder (hot)
1 tbsp Gebhardt chili powder
1 tbsp Hot New Mexico chili powder
1 16 oz. can of tomatoes cut up
2 8 oz. cans of tomato sauce
2 16 oz. cans of dark red kidney beans partially drained
1 tsp of brown sugar
Tabasco sauce to taste
½ cup water
Garnish:
Grated Cheese (cheddar)
Oyster crackers or saltines
Chopped onions
Directions:
- In a large saucepan, brown ground beef and spices together until flavour blends well.
- Drain fat.
- Add onion, green pepper and garlic and cook until soft.
- Stir in undrained tomatoes, seasonings, tomato sauce and water into a large pan.
- Letter simmer for several hours. Occasionally stir.
- Ten minutes before serving add brown sugar, Tabasco sauce and beans.
- Serve with ‘help yourself’ bows of grated cheese, oyster crackers and chopped onions.
If you’d like to make the chili yourself, then Tiffany over at ComicPOP has done a helpful video.
Greet
As head chef of the Green Lantern Corps, Greet is one of the most respected chefs in the universe. Being a chef can be stressful when you have to cook high-quality meals and since Greet runs the cafeteria on Oa, it’s a given that he’s good at his job. Just think about how many people he has to cook for on a regular basis. According to Guy Gardner, Greet is terrible when it comes to cooking Earth food, so it goes to show that every chef has their own unique style.
Taskmaster
Having a photographic memory definitely comes in handy when cooking, which makes Taskmaster talented in the kitchen. As he’s able to remember everything he sees, Taskmaster has memorised a countless number of recipes from watching TV. Taskmaster represents the effortless kind of chef who can produce a good meal in their sleep.
