4 Superheroes With Mental Health Problems

One of the biggest problems for people in the modern world is struggling with their mental health. Common mental health disorders are PTSD and depression. Although there has been a greater acceptance of mental health issues, many people are reluctant to talk about what they’ve been through for fear of being stigmatised. Comics are a good medium for exploring mental health, and there are many characters who deal with similar issues. Here are four superheroes who have battled with their mental health.

Henry ‘Hank’ Pym

As well as being the first Ant-Man, Hank Pym is one of the smartest men in the Marvel Universe. But that hasn’t stopped him from feeling inadequate. He’s also bipolar and the fact that Marvel have addressed this is positive because one of the original Avengers has a common disorder that a lot of people can relate to. Other symptoms of his disorder include depression and anxiety, which proves that even the most intelligent of us can struggle with mental health.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones has struggled with her mental health for years and a lot of it was addressed in her Alias series. The Purple Man took control of her and used Jones to do his bidding. This caused her to have PTSD and develop an alcohol problem. However, Jones was able to overcome her issues and become a strong mother and wife. She’s a great reminder that someone can find happiness even when they think they don’t deserve it.

Superman

How could Superman possibly have a mental health problem you ask? Just think about the trauma that comes with being Clark Kent. Superman has been portrayed as having an imposter complex in regards to his humanity. He’s a being of two worlds and questioning what it means to be human is something everyone can relate to. This makes Superman an interesting character and proves that someone can still struggle with their mental health even when they come from a loving family.

Batman

Bruce Wayne’s trauma of losing his parents inspired him to become Batman. He’s a survivor of deep mental anguish and he turned it into a reason to do good. Bruce’s complexity makes him compelling, from his obsessive personality, to his determination to keep fighting. After Jason Todd’s death, Batman sank deeper into his trauma and his darkness almost consumed him. He was pulled back from the edge by the likes of Alfred, Dick Grayson, Barbara Gordon and Tim Drake. Batman is an example of how having the right people in your life can make a
difference.

It’s more important than ever to look after our mental health and the best way to do it is to take it one step at a time. Never be afraid to talk about your issues with people who care about you and remember you’re stronger than you think.

  1. It’s a really well written post. Never knew superheroes could also suffer from mental problem. You can also write about Professor X in X men. He too suffered a setback after he lost his feet.
