One of the great things about Manchester is that is has a dedicated comic and pop culture community. Forbidden Planet and Travelling Man are two places you can go to satisfy your comic book needs. If you’re looking for something a little more niche, then you’ll want to check out the Northern Quarter’s newest pop culture store called Fanboy Three. The shop specialises in board games, card games and RPGs. Here is what you can expect when you walk inside.
Walk up the stairs and you’ll be greeted by shelves of board games, classic and modern. From World of War Craft, to Magic the Gathering, there are games for everyone to enjoy. In one section of the store, there are handbooks that will help you understand how to make the most of a game. The cover art alone on some of the books are worth looking at. For example, I came across a D&D starter set handbook that featured a terrifying green dragon on the front.
There’s also a corner dedicated to more obscure board games. These include games with historical settings, such as one that was set in the Victorian age. Fan Boy Three also features cases with intricately detailed figurines that would look great on any geek’s mantelpiece.
For anyone who wants to relax, the store has a coffee café that sells drinks at a reasonable price. This inviting atmosphere translates into the weekly gaming events that take place on the second floor. For £2 or £3, you’ll be able to play Pokémon League, Yugioh Hobby League, Magic: League and many more. It’s an ideal place to play all your favourite classic card games with your friends.
Although I’m not a big fan of board and card games, Fanboy Three is a wonderful addition to Manchester’s pop culture scene. It’s located on Newton Street and you won’t be able to miss the happy Pikachu painted into the glass. For more information you can visit their website.
